Swedish/Relaxation massage: Swedish massage, the most common type of massage found in the United States, is a system of long strokes, kneading, friction, percussion and vibration that can range from very light to very deep. Oils, lotions or creams are used to reduce the amount of friction on the skin. Additionally, stretching and/or strengthening exercises may be incorporated into the massage to help the client achieve goals such as increased flexibility, alleviating muscle imbalances and decreasing pain. This type of massage stimulates circulation and can be very relaxing or very energizing.

Therapeutic/Deep Tissue massage: Therapeutic massage combines Swedish and Deep tissue techniques delivering the benefits of both massages to the changing needs of each location of the body. The therapist starts with lighter pressure to warm up the superficial muscle layers and progresses to the deepest level of pressure, working within the client tolerance levels. Therapeutic massage helps alleviate chronic muscle pain and muscle adhesions (knots) using slow strokes, direct pressure, or friction directed across the grain of the muscles. Deep Tissue Work is applied with greater pressure and to deeper layers of muscle than Swedish massage.

Pregnancy massage: A Pre-Natal Massage is for women who are currently pregnant, and is customized specifically to the pregnancy. This therapeutic massage is designed to support the pregnant woman by addressing the dynamic changes that occur with pregnancy and safely relieving common discomforts experienced during and after pregnancy. Not only does this massage help mom feel better but also helps soothe and calm baby during pregnancy. A Post-Natal Massage happens about 4-12 weeks after baby’s birth and it helps soothe the muscles that have been stretched during pregnancy, especially at the joints.

Sports massage: Utilizing Swedish massage techniques, Sports massage is tailored to an athlete and their respective sport. Sports massage is designed to help an athlete warm up or cool down before or after an event and aid in the body’s regenerative capacities following a rigorous workout or competition. This massage is used by both amateur and professional athletes to help reduce the chance of injury by identifying and eliminating conditions in the muscles that are at potential risk of injury. Sports massage also relieves muscular cramps and tension, reduces swelling, alleviates muscle fatigue, and flushes toxins out of the body to decrease muscle soreness and increase recuperation.

Your Questions Answered

Discover more about our massage services and how they can benefit you.

What should I expect during my first visit?

We’ll ask you to fill out a health history form to let us know about any current concerns or goals you want us to deal with. We’ll then give you privacy to make yourself comfortable – whether you decide to remove your clothing or not. If you have questions, please don’t hesitate to ask them.

How often should I get a massage?

Frequency depends on your personal goals. For general wellness, a monthly session is recommended. For specific issues, more frequent visits may be beneficial.

Is massage painful?

It’s not unusual to feel some soreness after a massage. This is due to a release of lactic acid in the muscles, but it doesn’t last long. You may also have some discomfort during your massage. This depends on the area we’re working on, any pre-existing pains, and whether the therapist is using too much pressure. You can always ask the therapist to use less pressure at any time if it’s too uncomfortable.

Do I have to take my clothes off?

No! All our therapists will ask you to remove clothing only as far as you feel comfortable. If you only want to undress to your underwear, that’s fine.

What if I fall asleep and drool or snore?

When it comes to massage frequently asked questions, this is a common one. It’s normal to fall asleep during a massage. You might be feeling stressed and sleep-deprived, so falling asleep is normal once you’re in a relaxed state.

There’s zero judgment from us if you snore. We’re pleased you’re relaxed enough to fall asleep, and we won’t mention it. Drooling is also common, especially if you’re on your front. Ask us for a tissue, and we’ll be glad to grab one for you.

Isn't massage just to help you to relax?

Massage is excellent for relaxation! But it also has many other benefits.Massage helps with chronic muscle aches and pains. It helps to reduce stress and ease muscle tension. It’s also great to improve circulation, alleviate breathing problems, lower your blood pressure, reduce headaches, improve your daily mobility and wellbeing, and help you manage anxiety and depression. Massage also helps to promote good, healthy sleep. (see question 4 above about sleeping!)

What types of massage do you offer?

We offer a variety of massages including Swedish, Relaxation, Therapeutic, Deep Tissue, Pregnancy and Sports Massages… each designed to meet different needs.

Is it okay to ask for more or less pressure?

Yes! A good massage therapist will check in with you during your massage to make sure the pressure is okay. Be mindful that massage doesn’t have to cause you pain to be effective. Some massage techniques are pretty gentle. But do speak up and ask your therapist if you’d like more or less pressure during your session. We won’t be offended!
